Nicknamed "the pearl of the world," many people begin to crave it. Nearly as soon as Kino returns from sea, the whole town knows of the pearl. When Kino discovers an enormous pearl the size of a seagull's egg when out diving, he is ready to sell it for money to pay the doctor. When Coyotito is stung by a scorpion, Kino must find a way to pay the town doctor, an extremely prejudiced white man, to cure Kino's son. Kino, a young, strong, and poor Mexican-Indian pearl diver, lives in a small town, La Paz, with his domestic partner (to whom he is not married because he cannot afford to pay the priest for a wedding ceremony), Juana, and his baby son, Coyotito.
